Interview with reigning champion Domien Decononinck!

In the approach of the upcoming main event we speak with reigning champion Domien Deconinck! Will he defend his title?

Hi Domien how are things going? How have you been lately experiencing the coronavirus and have you been playing poker lately?

It is going very well! The coronavirus makes everything difficult of course. Unfortunately there is no live poker in the casinos anymore, but because I normally play online it’s not a big problem for me. There are a lot of great tournaments online that I can play and I try to play the nicest ones on all the poker sites! Not too high stakes of course because it is still  a hobby for me! It has to stay fun!

You are of course the reigning champion of the MEC Poker Open. Do you ever think back to your victory and how it went?

Yes, I talk about it with friends soemtimes. Coincidentally, I talked about it with some friends a few days ago. I played the first day online and was already sure of a €300 mincash. I had had a party the night before the final day and had a big hangover. I even doubted if I would go to Spa. I was already happy with €500 and in the end you win the tournament while with 5 men left I had 3 or 4 big blinds. Yes it was unbelievable but true! It may have been the highlight of my poker career, besides winning a Main Event package of PCA 10 in the Bahamas.

Have you been able to do anything special from the first prize?

I bought a super big Samsung TV. The biggest one there was! I also bought a new computer! The rest I just put on my savings account and of course I gave a small party for friends in the local cafe!

Are you going to defend your title and how do you estimate your chances?

Sure I am! I’m really looking forward to playing the MEC Poker Open! I already asked for time off for the live weekend so I can easily play. I have a lot of confidence in my game so I’m hopeful for a good result. We will see. I hope there will be a lot of participants, then it will be a great tournament!

MEC Poker Open not live but online on Bwin!

MEC Poker Open not live due to Corona

Unfortunately, in consideration with Casino de Spa, the organization of the MEC Poker Open has decided that the fourth edition scheduled for October cannot take place. The reason for this is the corona measures that the casino has to comply with from the government. The maximum number of visitors that may enter the casino at the same time is so limited that it is not financially sustainable to organize the MEC Poker Open. In addition, we want the MEC Poker Open to remain an experience accessible to the entire community that has been established in recent years.

Online edition of the MEC Poker Open on Bwin

Aside from the fact that we’d all love to play poker live, we’re very pleased to be able to turn the MEC Poker Open into an online edition in October thanks to our main sponsor Bwin! The MEC Poker Open Online will be held from 15-18 October.

Behind the scenes, we’ve been working hard on an online tournament schedule, but we’d like to hear and measure the opinions of the Community before releasing a final schedule. We are considering two options:

  • A $55 Main Event with a $109 Highroller
  • A $109 Main Event with $215 Highroller

Do you have a preference? Please let us know by filling in the survey below. We will be drawing one Bwin poker table among the people who complete the survey!

The results of the survey, the winner of the Bwin poker table and the tournament schedule for the MEC Poker Open Online will be announced on Tuesday, September 8th.

What will happen to my ticket?

Already bought a ticket for the MEC Poker Open? Your ticket will automatically be converted into a valid ticket for the next MEC Poker Open. This is scheduled from April 15-18, 2021 at Casino de Spa. You will soon receive a personal e-mail about this procedure.

Did you win a Highroller ticket via satellite? Then there are two options available. You can have your ticket converted to the next edition of the MEC Poker Open (April 15-18, 2021) or you can exchange the value of your Highroller ticket for tickets to the MEC Poker Open Online (October 15-18). We won’t know how many tickets this will be and what their value will be until we know the online tournament schedule. You will soon receive a personal e-mail about this procedure so that you can indicate your preference.

Did you win a Main Event Package via satellite? Then there are two options available regarding your Main Event ticket. You can have your ticket converted to the next edition of the MEC Poker Open (April 15-18, 2021) or you can exchange the value of your Main Event ticket for tickets to the MEC Poker Open Online (October 15-18). We won’t know how many tickets this will be and what their value will be until we know the online tournament schedule. You hotelroom will be automatically converted to the next edition (15-18 April 2021). You will soon receive a personal e-mail about this procedure, so you can indicate your preference regarding the Main Event ticket.

Have you booked a hotel room with us? We will cancel it for you free of charge. We will contact everyone who has booked his/her hotel room through the organization next week.

Online satellites currently canceled

The online satellites that are organized every Sunday at Bwin have been cancelled for the time being. When the tournament schedule for the MEC Poker Open Online is known, it may be possible to look into organizing a number of more satellites for this tournament.

You can still play every Sunday on our private cash game tables at Bwin! For more information click on the button below.

Can the MEC Poker Open take place in October?

There is a lot of uncertainty because of the corona virus. Likewise, many participants will wonder if the MEC Poker Open will continue in October. The organization of the MEC Poker Open and Casino de Spa are discussing possible scenarios. This is the current state of affairs.

The answer is for the time being, yes!

We watch the rest of the world play the first poker tournaments again in casinos. Not quite as we are used to, but with the necessary health measures. Since it’s still 3.5 months to go until the date the MEC Poker Open is scheduled, a lot can change. Both positive and negative.

For now, we’re assuming the positive scenario, which means that the MEC Poker Open in October will continue as planned. If health measures need to be taken (such as hand gel, mouth caps or plexiglass) in order for it to go through, we will first look at the organizational options for taking care of them. Then we will research and consider whether the measures do not affect the fun of the participants too much in a negative way.

What if it has to be cancelled anyway?

If the measures to deal with the corona virus persist for a longer period of time, it may be decided at some point that the MEC Poker Open cannot continue at Casino de Spa anyway. In that case it will be ensured that all participants who have purchased a ticket or qualified via one of the satellites at Bwin will be compensated appropriately.

One form of compensation could be that purchased tickets are moved to the next edition. The first edition for 2021 is already planned with Casino de Spa! Thanks to our main sponsor Bwin, we also have the opportunity to organize the MEC Poker Open online.

Should the situation change to such an extent that the organization decides to cancel the event in October or host it online, all players who have already purchased a ticket will receive an email about this. You can also check our website, Facebook and Instagram for the latest news.

That’s why our main sponsor Bwin now offers private cash game tables especially for the MEC Poker Open Community! You can still qualify for the MEC Poker Open online as well. Main Event gets more starting days

The €175,- Main Event gets two more starting days! The Main Event kicks off with an online starting day on Bwin (Day 1 Online). The first live starting day at Casino de Spa starts at 5pm on Thursday October 15 (1A). On friday you can play Day 1B at 2pm just as last year but this time there are only 90 seats available. The other 135 seats are added to one extra regular starting day on the same day starting at 7pm (1C). On Saturday there will be two more chances. At 1pm you can play Day 1D (180 seats) and in the evening we have our first Turbo starting day (1E) at 9pm with another 135 seats available!

Every starting day you can re-enter the tournament as much as you need untill Level 5. Countless opportunities for you to make it to Day 2! Also different from last year is that there will be an exciting bubble fase on Sunday, because the best 15% of the field is in the money instead of the previous ‘make day 2 and you’re in the money’ rule.
